beginners & tour bikers

Classic mountain bike tours range from relaxed beginner tours to challenging trails. Here are three of the easier tours to start with:

Small tour for the day of arrival

If you can't wait to get onto the bike and discover the surroundings, we recommend doing the valley tour Mathon. This route is also suitable for beginners and families with children. You start in Ischgl and various paved & gravel roads lead you uphill until you reach Mathon. On the other side of the valley, you get back to Ischgl via the trail 'Mathias Schmid Kunstlehrpfad'.

Valley tour Galtür

The valley tour to Galtür is already a bit longer. You start on the same trail to Mathon, then continue on gravel roads until Galtür. You will be rewarded with fantastic views over the peaks of the Silvretta mountain range and get back to Ischgl along the mountain brook Trisanna.

Lareinalm tour

The remote valley Lareintal between Ischgl and Galtür impresses with its breathtaking landscape. Starting in Mathon, you cycle up the 600 metres altitude until reach the Lareinalm at 1.860m. After a short stop-over you can either go back to the Paznaun or go on to the Lareintal. There, you are rewarded with gorgeous views over the glacier Lareinferner.

Enduro MTB ours are a true pleasure for all-rounders. Whether trails or gravel roads - the fun of biking is at the centre of attention. Here are three marvellous enduro trails:

Schmuggler Freeride

This tour takes you to Samnaun in Switzerland. Firstly one is transported comfortably via cable car and chairlift to the Idjoch, from where there's only a short push section until the highest point of this tour: the Greitspitz summit at 2,872metres. Via Greitspitz and Salaaser trail the route leads you down to Samnaun; here via the double-decker gondola back to Alp Trida and then with the chairlift to the Flimjoch, where the next trail firework begins. Namely the Velill trail is the absolute dream trail for all Enduro bikers. With 530 metres altitude, which can be tackled even with a moderate fitness level; it's also never too technically difficult on this nine kilometre trail.

This newly established trail on Swiss soil is a lot of fun. The trail begins at the Alp Trida Sattel restaurant. To get here, first take the gondola from Ischgl up to the Idjoch ridge, then down to the Alp Trida and then soar to the start on the Alp Trida chair lift. The Swiss know how to do things and have built a great but not too challenging trail, which is plenty of fun even after several rides. Beginners can make their first attempts here and those who master their bikes can speed through the slightly elevated curves. This short trail can also be perfectly combined with the newly built Alp Trida Enduro Trail.

Alp Trida Enduro Trail

Head in comfort to the Idjoch on the cable car and chairlift, where the trail begins. On the restructured Alp Trida Enduro Trail, beginners who want to get a taste for the trails for the first time as well as advanced riders who want to give it a bit more pedal through the bends, really get their money's worth. The descent promises riding pleasure at its very best with rewarding views. The trail, which is barely 4 km in length, is not quite so long as to overtax trail fledglings, while those who have better control over their bike, can – thanks to the bike transport available at the lifts – relax and hammer down several times a day.

For experienced bikers

Big mountain tours

Last but not least, the ‘Big Mountain’ tours are challenging, premier level mountain bike tours in Silvretta. They provide long, extensive high Alpine circuits with and without cable car support and consist in part of several cleverly combined Enduro tours. The focus here is on maximum enjoyment of the trail and the landscape. They consist of a large proportion of singletrails and factor in as many metres altitude climbing and descent as possible.

Here's a selection of the supreme discipline tours in the Silvretta Arena – only for experienced mountain bikers:

Tour Paznauner Taja

Those who want to really exert themselves can pedal via Prennerhang and the ensuing asphalt path to Idalp which has inclines up to 20 percent in places; everyone else can take the Silvrettabahn. Those who have the muscle power have to be prepared to cover a route of around 20 km and some 1,100 metres altitude. On the Idalp you proceed on a super trail, which continues slightly uphill, via lush, and at times damp Alpine pasture land, which has wooden boards built over, and which requires good balance on the bike. From Höllboden the route then proceeds short and steep; push your bike uphill to Sassgalun Kopfmountain, where the Soul Trail then heads down the mountain again to the dairy station. Roll downhill on gravel for the remainder of the route to the stop-off station at Paznaun's Taja. There is a choice here - trail fans can take the steep trail to Bodenalpe, while the highly sensitive might prefer the gravel road, before either sweeping from here onto the trails, or on the asphalt path at the intermediate station to Ischgl.

Jamtal tour

40 kilometres, almost 900 metres altitude and a magnificent panorama - the Jamtal tour is a genuinely superb riding adventure for racers and tourers alike. Firstly the tour leads from Ischgl past the wildlife park and the forest chapel to the village of Galtür. Then you make your way up into the Jamtal valley, where eyecatchers such as the Vordere and Hintere Jamspitze and the Jamtal glacier keep you spectacularly motivated. This tour is not to be classified as leisurely because you need to pace yourself in order to manage the almost 1,000 metres altitude and an unpleasantly steep but short section briefly before the lodge. The Jamtal lodge at 2,165 metres is an amazing place for a stop-over before the route continues comfortably back to Ischgl. All in all an impressive experience!

The tour over the 2.620m high Muttenjoch is one of the most beautiful Big Mountain Singletrail tours. On the way, you'll find three gorgeous huts for a stop-over: the Alpengasthof Zeinisjoch, the Heilbronner hut and the Friedrichshafener hut. This tour starts in Galtür, where you pass the Alpinarium on your way to the Zeinisjoch. It then continues on a gravel road to the Heilbronner hut, from where a challenging trail leads you up to the valley Ochsental. Up there, you'll have to push your bike for 300 metres and reach a singletrail leading almost to the Friedrichshafener hut. You really deserve a break at this point, before you ride back to the valley on a gravel road and a pretty difficult trail.

Come to the Paznaun, enjoy the ischglliving experience and face the challenge of the unique Big Mountain MTB tours in Ischgl.
